A 13-1 home defeat to the Girard Trojans on Monday marked a low point for the campaign, while Tuesday’s 3-1 loss at Fort Scott showed signs of renewed life.

Two losses for the Parsons Vikings so far this week showcased different ends of a spectrum.
A 13-1 home defeat to the Girard Trojans on Monday marked a low point for the campaign, while Tuesday’s 3-1 loss at Fort Scott showed signs of renewed life.
On Monday, Girard, which Parsons beat earlier in the season, 20-15, run-ruled the Vikings in a game where Parsons never looked competitive.
“Monday, it was about our attitude and effort,” Parsons first-year head coach Josh Robertson said. “We had beating Girard the week before, then getting run-ruled the next week, nothing changes except being mentally ready.”
Mikey Ramsey was charged with the loss for the Vikings against Girard. While he allowed eight runs, none of them were earned.
Robertson called the Vikings players into a morning practice to regroup after Monday’s loss.
“We had a practice on Tuesday morning after that loss and it was just about talking and telling the players what the coaches want,” Robertson said. “We told them we’re looking for the nine guys that’ll give us the best effort to keep us in games.”
While Parsons fell to Fort Scott on Tuesday in SEK League play, the defeat was far more palatable.
“Fort Scott is a team that run-ruled Pittsburg and we competed,” Robertson said. “We got bases loaded twice in that game and we couldn’t put situational hitting together.”
Landon Rowland delivered a near-signature outing for the Vikings on the hill, lasting all six required frames with four hits and four walks allowed. Rowland struck out four batters.
“He threw great. Those four walks were close pitches,” Robertson said. “They weren’t wild pitches. They were borderline. Landon was hitting his spots. Early on, they hit his fastball well. But then he got them off balance by mixing his pitches. Our defense backed him up. It was good baseball.”
The two losses dipped Parsons’ record to 3-4 overall on the season.
Up Next
Parsons heads to Cherryvale on Thursday for its third game of the week.
“We’ve been struggling at the plate the last two games,” Robertson said. “We’re really focusing on our hitting, especially situational hitting. Hopefully our defense carries over to Cherryvale.”
