CHEROKEE — Winners of four games in a row, the Parsons Vikings earned a spot in the Lancer Classic title game after beating College Heights, 55-47, on Thursday night.
“It’s always nice to get a win,” Parsons head coach Anthony Houk said. “It puts us in the championship game of this tournament. That’s a blessing.”
Landon Wheat was the star for the Vikings, dropping 21 points while dominating the glass.
“I thought our team shared the ball really well,” Houk said. “They got Landon some good looks. He also had a great night on the boards. He attacked the glass on both ends of the floor.”
Perhaps most promising about Thursday’s performance for Parsons was its ability to break down a zone defense.
“Offensively, in half-court, we did pretty well,” Houk said. “We didn’t just settle for 3-pointer after 3-pointer against that zone. We got a look of good looks inside.”
The Vikings commanded a 20-point lead at one point in the game, but College Heights’ press defense fueled a comeback that trimmed the margin to two possessions in the final quarter.
“They went to that press and — we can break a press — we got a little rattled,” Houk said. “We had some miscues in the fourth quarter. Fortunately, we were able to move on.”
Caleb Quade led College Heights, a private school in Missouri, with a dozen points.
Parsons now sits at 5-6 overall on the season.
Parsons will face Columbus on Saturday night in the Lancer Classic championship. The Vikings are hunting their fourth Lancer Classic title since 2015.
“It’s an awesome opportunity to be able to bring home a first-place trophy,” Houk said. “That can give us a lot of momentum going back into league play. We’ve taken some steps forward. We’ve just got to keep doing that.”
