INDEPENDENCE — Three decades was long enough for Labette County’s boys 4x100 meter relay record to last.
At Tuesday’s Montgomery County Classic in Independence, the 2023 team of Jamaal Jackson, Zavier Phillips, Isaiah Rosenberg and Tray Vinson broke a 33-year school record set in 1990 for the 4x100m relay with at time of 44.08 seconds.
“It was exciting to see it coming,” Labette County head coach Chris Wacker said. “We knew we’d have a level of sprinting we haven’t seen on the boys side in a while. It’s catching on now. I think they have a chance to go after a few other records, too.”
Ironically, Labette County’s record-breaking performance in the 4x100 didn’t win Tuesday’s event as that went to Chanute, who edged out Labette County by four-hundredths of a second.
Labette County’s girls won the Montgomery County Classic as a team with 115 points.
“We didn’t go in thinking about winning it,” Wacker said. “But as the meet went on … we’ve got some depth and we’re getting more consistent. A lot of our girls from last year are consistently hitting marks that were better than last year.”
Top-three finishers in both boys and girls for Labette County included Allee Martin claiming third in the long jump (15’2.5”) and triple jump (32’3.75”).
