CHERRYVALE — A low stress opening to the postseason saw every rostered player score for the top seed as the Cherryvale Chargers blasted past the Baxter Springs Lions, 81-17, in the first round of the KSHSAA 3A Sub-State Tournament.
“We knew we had to stay disciplined and we knew what we wanted to work on,” Cherryvale head coach Kelsey Overacker said. “Even though the score wasn’t close, we don’t want to get into bad habits. That was the focus tonight — stay focused and go run the floor.”
All 11 players suited up for Cherryvale, the No. 1 seed in the bracket, registered points. Jailee Reister’s 18 points led the Chargers while Bethany Umbarger added 11.
“We have a deep bench, we really do,” Overacker said. “We have a lot of kids that know their role. You don’t really see them in the scoring column very much. But we were selfless tonight. We have kids we can shoot and we have kids that can make the extra pass. It was fun to see, especially in the last home game of the year.”
Cherryvale, aiming for back-to-back trips to the state tournament, now gets two days of practice before Thursday’s sub-state semifinals in Girard.
“These kids have been here,” Overacker said. “We have a lot of experience in high level games. They’ve been in the sub-state championship a lot. So they know what it’s like to play games that are very meaningful. If we play our game, I know what we’re capable of.”
In a rematch of last year’s sub-state semifinals, Cherryvale will face Galena on Thursday at Girard High School.
Atop the Chargers’ scouting report is Galena point guard Mia Sarwinski, a high-volume scorer averaging 22 points per game.
“We’ve got to play us,” OVeracker said. “Sarwinski will be a big key for us. She plays hard. But everybody is trying to play their best basketball. We’ve just got to know that if we follow the scout and buy in, we’re pretty darn good.”
