Labette baseball made its first appearance at Marvel Park on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping Oklahoma Wesleyan JV 3-2, 10-0.
The Cardinals needed eight frames to put away Wesleyan in Game 1. Parsons High School graduate Luke Wolgamott homered in the game for one of Labette’s three runs.
Aidan Shultz got the start on the hill, delivering seven innings while allowing three hits and two runs, both unearned, and striking out nine.
Josh Ropple was credited with the winning decision, pitching a perfect final inning.
“The first game, we kicked it around a little bit defensively,” Labette head coach Alex Coplon said. “That’s what gave them their two runs. Our starter had a great day on the mound. Offensively, we hit balls hard but right at people. But we found a way to win that game.”
The second game was a much more decisive victory for the Cardinals, who scored seven runs in the second inning to bury Wesleyan.
“That momentum rolled into Game 2,” Coplon said. “It was a home opener for everybody and it felt good to get the first win out of the way. We had a good day offensively.”
Noah Edwards blasted a grand slam in Game 2 and scored four runs over the two games.
“He’s hitting every single game,” Coplon said. “He’s been pretty good so far and he’s the leader of this team.”
Labette notched its first two wins of the season in its home opener, moving the Cardinals to 2-5 on the season. The Cardinals begin Kansas Jayhawk Conference play at Johnson County on Thursday but are hoping to play one-to-two non-conference dates before then.
“We needed to get those first couple of wins out of the way,” Coplon said. “We found some things on offense. We found a rhythm and that answered a lot of questions. A lot of guys got at-bats. Our biggest question is how we produce offensively.”
