Labette's Weir takes first as Cardinals wrestle in first open of season

“He’s getting back in shape and finally starting to wrestle,” Labette head coach Jeff Vesta said. “He’s trying to get his confidence back and up and it looks like it’s finally getting there.” 

Alex Young took fourth place at 149 pounds for Labette, winning three matches and losing two. Young’s first loss came to Blake Gonzalez of NEO A&M, the national champion at 141 pounds a season ago.

“He wrestled well in a tough bracket. The top two guys were national champions a year ago. He really did wrestle very well,” Vesta said of Young.

Jonathan Vincent took fourth place at 165 pounds for Labette, going 3-2 on the day.

“I’m proud of him,” Vesta said. “He came in as a 157 pounder but he’s been lifting, putting on some muscle and he’s really started doing well.” 

Donnie Hurd III placed third at 174 pounds for the Cardinals, with two wins and two losses.

“There were some close matches with our losses to good athletes,” Vesta said. “We’ll see those guys again. I look forward to seeing those matchups.” 

At 184 pounds, Labette’s Jeremiah Voliva took fourth place with three wins and a pair of defeats.

“We’re continuing to fix little mistakes and little things with him,” Vesta said. “He’s another one that stays in the wrestling room after practice every day.” 

Labette sent six heavyweights to the open with Michah Lieberman taking third place.

“We should have won that bracket with him,” Vesta said. “He was a little frustrated.” 

On Tuesday, Labette heads to another set of conference duals at Cloud County.

“We’re a young team that need more and more matches up to build that confidence,” Vesta said. “That was the first college match for a lot of guys in our lineup. So we’ll keep building off them.”
