GIRARD — Now one win away from a second straight bid to the state tournament, the Cherryvale Chargers beat the Galena Bulldogs, 61-50, in the KSHSAA 3A Sub-State Tournament semifinals on Thursday.
“We found a way to win and to get to Saturday,” Cherryvale head coach Kelsey Overacker said. “We had some kids step up off the bench that was really big for us. That shows how deep our bench is. We have a lot of role players and they stepped up tonight.”
Jailee Reister led Cherryvale with 16 points while Kelsi Lantz added 15.
Galena’s senior point guard Mia Sarwinski ended her career with a 32-point night.
“We knew Sarwinski would go off a little bit,” Overacker said. “That’s the type of player she is. But they didn’t hurt us too much otherwise.”
Cherryvale led by one through one quarter before extending the advantage to double digits by halftime.
Treys from Reister and Lantz helped fuel the run.
“We had a couple of big shots in a row and some big rebounds,” Overacker said. “When our shooters get hot, we’re hard to defend. That got the energy back on our side and then we get into our press. We took advantage there.”
Thursday’s win felt like the first postseason game for the Chargers after a thrashing of Baxter Springs on Monday in the first round of sub-state.
“We try to keep the same mentality, no matter what,” Overacker said. “It’s higher stakes knowing that if you lose, you’re done. But our mindset isn’t changing. We want to play our game and that’s hard to beat. We know it’ll be high emotions on Saturday. I’m confident in who we have.”
Cherryvale and Frontenac, the top two seeds, will square off in the sub-state championship in Girard on Saturday.
Four of Frontenac’s six losses came to schools Class 4A or higher and the other two came to St. Mary’s Colgan, the top-ranked Class 2A team in the state by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association.
“We know they’re very good,” Overacker said. “Their losses are to high-level teams. I’d like to think we’re identical. They’ve got shooters that can knock down threes. It’ll be a fun game to watch.”
