Labette wrapped up three straight days of doubleheaders on Saturday — one against Maple Woods followed by two against Division I NEO A&M — with a four-game split of NEO A&M.

The Cardinals played in Miami, Oklahoma on Friday then at home on Saturday, splitting both doubleheaders to move to 4-2 on the season.

Labette opened Friday with a 12-4 loss to NEO A&M before rebounding with a 7-3 road win. The Cardinals then started Saturday with a 6-4 victory before falling 9-0.

“I thought we played well at times,” Labette head coach Ryan Phillips said. “I don’t feel like we played to our capability for all four games. We had two of our losses come with significant margins. That’s not great. But NEO is a great team and we faced some of the best pitching we’ll see all year.”

NEO A&M, a team miles ahead of Maple Woods in terms of talent, presented Phillips with a clearer picture of where the Cardinals stand to start the year.

“I take a lot away from the four games,” Phillips said. “We saw a lot of kids step up and take advantage of opportunities. We were able to see some of the pop and power in our lineup. Overall, we have the opportunity to be one of the best teams if we just play consistently.”

Labette faces two Division I Kansas Jayhawk Conference opponents this week as Pratt comes to Parsons on Wednesday, followed by another home series against Independence on Saturday.

“Sam (Campbell) will have her kids at Indy ready to play against us being a Labette alumni herself,” Phillips said. “Pratt has a new coach and I don’t know a lot about them. If we play well, I think we can beat anybody in the country.”
