Turnovers, free throw struggles and fatigue led to the Parsons Vikings girls’ 23rd straight loss on Friday night as they fell to the Independence Bulldogs 69-42.

While keeping the game within striking distance through much fo the first half, Parsons struggled to break Independence’s press and shot 3-of-13 from the charity stripe in the first 16 minutes.

“The difference in the game was turnovers in the first half and free throws,” Parsons head coach Pat Schibi said. “We’re ahead at halftime if we cut those down. But we’re trying to stay positive. We’re still young and getting better.”

Freshman Iniya Hinman led Parsons with 18 points.

“She really stepped it up,” Schibi said. “She’s had a few good practices. We told her she needed to play more aggressively and she did that. She looked to attack. She played hard.”

Independence limited Parsons’ scoring opportunities with its press and kept the Vikings from hitting a single 3-pointer.

“You’ve got to give them some credit on defense,” Schibi said. “When we slowed down, didn’t panic and got the ball up the court, we did a good job. We’ve got to do a better job of running our sets and setting up our offense.”

The Bulldogs, who were led in scoring by Abby Veile’s 20 points, pulled away in the second half as Parsons’ depth was stretched thin.

“About every one of these girls are playing six quarters a night,” Schibi said. “We’ve got to get in better shape. And we’ve got to work on our defense. We’ve got to get teams into the forties.”

Now 0-4 on the season, Parsons is back in action on Thursday as it travels to Altamont for a makeup game with rival Labette County.

“Our plan is to have a good practice Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday then go out and play hard,” Schibi said. “We’ve got to keep getting better on our side. And I feel like we’re getting there.”
