ERIE — Depth and speed got the better of the Erie Red Devils on Friday as they lost to the Northeast Vikings, 55-37, in the semifinals of the KSHSAA 2A Sub-State Tournament.
“We played hard in the first half but got kind of lazy in the second half,” Erie head coach Sindy Daniels said. “We had some big threes in the first half, but we just ran out of gas and lost our heads. And we didn’t hit the shots we needed to at the end.”
Erie committed 28 turnovers in the game as the Vikings’ press wore down the Red Devils.
Jacksen Powell led Erie with 14 points. The sophomore forward registered a double-double, pulling down 12 rebounds, while shooting 6-of-13 from the field.
“Our posts had to have a good game,” Daniels said. “Jacksen played hard. She could’ve had 20 points easily tonight. She’s just a sophomore so she’s got room to grow.”
Liberty Sigmon led Northeast with 14 points.
Erie, which upset 15-win Pleasanton in the first round of sub-state to advance to Friday’s semifinals, finishes the season with a 7-15 overall record.
The Red Devils won four of its last seven games.
“There’s not a lot of girls that played any varsity last year,” Daniels said. “We started out pretty crappy. But we were playing our best ball at the end of the season. There’s some teams we lost to early and beat them later — Southeast, Uniontown. And we played a lot of tough teams.”
Erie goes into the offseason with one senior, Skyller Hopper, departing the roster.
“We’ve got to work on our outside shooting a lot,” Daniels said. “We bring a lot of girls back. Hopefully we can build on everything we’ve done this year.”
