Playing in their third tournament and first one at home this spring, the Parsons Vikings didn’t lose a match at Forest Park on Thursday to claim first place.
Hosting Coffeyville, Chanute and Independence, the Vikings went a perfect 12-0 in matches.
“We won every match and that was our mindset going into it,” Parsons head coach Jane Posch said. “It wasn’t Independence’s studs and we don’t want to lose to them. Chanute had its varsity and it was nice to beat them. I didn’t figure we’d have any trouble in the other matches. Our goal was to get a sweep.”
Wyatt Shultz beat Sol Hanna of Coffeyville, 8-0, Noah Vogel of Chanute, 8-1, and Zach Scott of Independence, 8-2, in the top singles division.
“He had a dominant performance. For a freshman, he’s stepping right in to take that top spot,” Posch said. “He didn’t have a ton of competition today. At Ark City, he faced kids that were at the top of Class 5A. On Thursday, the goal was not to have a bad loss.”
At No. 2 singles, Parsons’ Tanner Nolting defeated Creighton Wiles of Coffeyville, 8-1, Ayden Cummings of Chanute, 8-1, and Luke Schlorholtz of Independence, 8-6.
“He could play No. 1 for any team,” Posch said. “He struggled in one match against Independence – that kid was unorthodox. But he came back and won it and I was proud of him for that.”
In the No. 1 doubles division, Davis West and Conner Barcus defeated Antonio Huerta and Caleb Turner of Coffeyville, 8-2, Ethan Burnett and Parker Henson of Chanute, 8-2, and Tucker Gregory and Matthew McLenon of Independence, 8-4.
“They didn’t have much trouble today,” Posch said. “I didn’t know much about what to expect from Chanute. But I’m feeling more confident now.”
Parsons’ Mason Morris and Davion Holeman, in No. 2 doubles, defeated Pierce Webber and Ismael Ellyson of Coffeyville, 8-1, Ector Garlic and Jaxson Vaughan of Chanute, 8-2 and Tyson Martinez and Logan Holmes of Independence, 8-3.
“They’re starting to gel together and they really had a great day,” Posch said. “Mason medaled at state last year. He’s starting to look like the kid he was last year.”
Parsons also competed on Tuesday at a tournament in Arkansas City that featured mostly Class 5A competition, including the top two teams in the state in Maize South and Topeka West.
Parsons placed 10th at the tournament with 44 points.
