ERIE — Nearly a month off didn’t stymie the Erie Red Devils girls on Tuesday night as they walloped the Caney Valley Bullpups 55-30 to stay undefeated.
The win improved Erie’s record to 6-0 on the season.
The Red Devils’ defense swallowed Caney Valley as it held the Bullpups to four points in a quarter twice.
“We’ve really been working on our defense,” Erie head coach Sindy Daniels said. “We’re picking up the ball more instead of standing still. We’re getting our traps going and I was really impressed with that.”
Maddie Kramer led Erie with 20 points while Skylar Clevenger added 17.
“Skylar was hitting her threes and that’s a good thing,” Daniels said. “That’s long overdue. With Maddie, she’s always looking inside. She gets the trash that comes off the rim and finishes them. She’s always doing well pulling in rebounds.”
Erie was without normal starter Sarah Stark, who is in the midst of KSHSAA’s return-to-play protocol after being diagnosed with COVID-19. Freshman Alex Pasquarelli earned the starting nod in Stark’s stead.
“With COVID going on, you never know who will be in or out,” Daniels said. “We’ve said from the get-go that everybody has to know every position. Everybody has to know everybody’s role. Alex definitely did a good job starting for us tonight.”
Erie now prepares for a true litmus test on Friday as the Red Devils travel to Eureka, which won the Tri-Valley League a season ago. Tuesday’s game, along with Friday’s do not count towards Tri-Valley League play as the squads will see each other again later in the season.
“We have a big game on Friday and our team sometimes gets scared against teams that have beat us in the past,” Daniels said. “Eureka will be a good challenge for us. If we can handle it or step up to the plate, we’ll see. If we lose, it won’t hurt us.”
