The Cherryvale Chargers opened the 2019 volleyball season on Tuesday with a pair of sweeps against Sedan and Coffeyville.
Against Sedan, the Chargers won 2-0 (25-19, 25-11) before sweeping host Coffeyville 2-0 (25-22, 25-17).
In the two matches, Camdyn Forman paced the Chargers with 10 kills and 15 digs. Morrigan Catlin added eight kills and three blocks.
Kobi Pearson led Cherryvale with 48 assists while adding seven aces, while Joy Renfro had 11 digs and seven aces.
“The girls came together and played extremely well tonight,” Cherryvale head coach Brianna Stapleton said. “They played together during hard times and kept their composure. I saw a lot of great things from every girl and I’m excited to see where we go this season.”
As for Erie, it opened the season with a win and a loss at Girard.
The Red Devils’ opening match of the season went their way as they swept Uniontown 2-0 (25-16, 25-19).
Maddie Kramer and Jenna LaRue had 10 kills apiece in the match, while Molly LaForge added 14 assists.
Girard then swept Erie 2-0 (25-21, 28-26) to wrap up Erie’s night. Skylar Clevenger, LaForge and LaRue had three kills apiece for Erie in the loss.
“We played too much defense against Girard,” Erie head coach Karla LaForge said. “We must improve our passing so we can be more aggressive on offense.”
Erie returns to action on Thursday at Baxter Springs.
