In another batch of postseason honors for the Labette Cardinals softball team, five players earned NJCAA Region VI District E recognition.

Audrey Miller was selected as a First Team catcher, while Payton Nigh, Haylee Van Deventer, Jessica Allen and Erika Reed were Second Team honorees.

Nigh and Van Deventer were the two sophomores to make the district team.

Nigh, the Labette shortstop this spring, hit .318 with 21 RBI, three home runs and 12 stolen bases.

Van Deventer, a pitcher, led the Cardinals with 120.1 innings pitched, maintained a 12-5 record and 3.20 ERA with 91 strikeouts over 24 appearances this spring.

“Both of them did well,” Labette head coach Ryan Phillips said. “Haylee threw very well for us late, and Payton was consistent for us throughout the year. Offensively, she picked up late as well. She was our leader going into the postseason. Haylee’s productivity late in the postseason was crucial, she threw a lot of innings.”

The Cardinals will return three freshmen – Miller, Reed and Allen — that earned district honors.

Miller was Labette’s biggest threat offensively, hitting .415 with 11 home runs, 44 RBI and 13 doubles while slugging .756. As a catcher, Miller caught 15-of-41 base-stealers.

Reed hit .261 this spring with 22 RBI and eight stolen bases with three home runs and four doubles, while Allen hit .258 with nine RBI and one home run.

Phillips added that he thought Julia Hawkins, who earned All-KJCCC recognition, deserved All-District E honors as well.

“We have a good core coming back,” Phillips said. “It’s great honors for them. I thought Julia was at least deserving of getting a nod, but to each their own. She got all-conference. The core we have with our freshmen group is exciting to build on.”

Labette finished the season with a 23-20 overall record, snapping a two-year streak of losing seasons, and returned to Topeka for the double elimination bracket portion of the Region VI Tournament after missing out in 2018.
