The Class 3A All-District 1 football honors were released with Parsons and Cherryvale players included in the list.

Parsons had 10 total selections while Cherryvale had seven. In the six-team district, champion Galena had 11 honorees. Columbus had 10, Caney Valley had eight and Baxter Springs had one.

“I know a lot of different leagues have all-league teams,” Cherryvale head coach Robert Henderson said. “I know Parsons is in a boat where they’re not in a league. So we wanted to have some way to recognize the work the kids put in.”

Parsons senior Dion Sylvester was a First Team selection as both a wide receiver and defensive back. He had 46 catches for 766 yards and eight touchdowns as a receiver while registering 62 tackles and three interceptions in the secondary.

“He’s a playmaker every single Friday night,” Parsons head coach Jeff Schibi said. “He was a joystick on offense and on defense, he was a ball hawk. We’ll miss him on Friday nights next year.”

Isiah Tyson, a senior defensive end, also earned First Team honors for Parsons. Tyson led the Vikings with 68 tackles, including 12 for a loss and 3.5 sacks. He also registered a fumble return for a touchdown and two fumble recoveries.

“You typically don’t see a defensive end leading a team in tackles,” Schibi said. “He’s an intimidating presence out there and worked hard on his game. His football playing days are long from over.”

Parsons senior offensive lineman Zack Cowen was another First Team selection.

“He’s such a great kid and I’m happy to see his name on the list.” Schibi said. “He doesn’t talk a lot. But the work he puts in on the field and in the weight room makes him so deserving. He just works hard.”

At linebacker, Parsons senior Ja’vyn Brown earned First Team honors with 43 tackles, including 3.5 for a loss, and one pass breakup.

“It’s neat to see his name on the list at linebacker, because a week before our first game, he was playing free safety,” Schibi said. “He came to the coaches and we moved him to linebacker to get him on the field. It was one of the best moves of the season and he played exceptionally well.”

JJ Kendrick earned Second Team recognition as a wide receiver. He was joined by defensive back Cam Kendrick, defensive linemen Hunter Brownewell and Malik Ferguson as well as kicker Landon Wheat on the Second Team.

Cherryvale nabbed a pair of First Team selections. Connor Wickham was selected as an offensive lineman.

“He did a terrific job for us,” Henderson said. “He did a great job moving people and was our best lineman. He was a great kid that showed up every day this season.”

Briggs Adkison, a utility player for the Chargers, was selected to the First Team as a punter.

“He had an awesome season,” Henderson said. “He had to step into the running back role for us and that’s out of his comfort zone. But he did a great job for us. He did some of everything for us and was a great football player.”

Second Team nods for Cherryvale included lineman Danny Vigil, defensive back Austin Hopper, Adkison as a defensive back, linebacker Jackson Knight.
