Facing a Kansas Jayhawk Conference Division I opponent for the second time in a week, the Labette Cardinals swept Independence 9-4, 7-3 on Saturday afternoon to move to 8-2 on the season.

Despite the two wins, Labette head coach Ryan Phillips felt the Cardinals could have been more decisive in their performance.

“It was sloppy for a lot of it today,” Phillips said. “We’ve got to be better. I’m happy with the sweep. But I want to see how good we can play. We have so many little mistakes that blow up. We’ve got to minimize that. But it’s early. If you can play badly early and still get wins, that’s great.”

Labette’s offense put up big numbers across the lineup, tallying 19 hits over the two games.

Grey Holland, the Cardinals’ first baseman and third-year sophomore, homered in Game 1 and racked up four RBI on the day.

“She hits every ball hard,” Phillips said. “That’s our offensive mentality, is to be a tough out. We want the defense to make a tough play. Grey is squaring balls up and seeing the ball well. She’s got a lot of pop.”

The wins for the Cardinals came against an opposing head coach, Sam Allen, that played for Labette under Phillips in 2010-11. Allen is one of three former Labette players or coaches that are head coaches in the KJCCC, with the other two being Kim Alexander at Neosho County and Kae Lani Bryan at Fort Scott.

“It’s fun to see old players that I’ve coached,” Phillips said. “It’s an exciting day and I know what we’ll get when I play those girls. It’s humbling to see and I respect Sam. She’s done a great job and is working Independence into a really good program.”

Labette hits the road on Tuesday for a showdown with Crowder, another Division I foe, in Neosho, Missouri.

“Crowder is going to be very well coached,” Phillips said. “They have two good pitchers that throws he ball really well. They’ve got good power in the lineup. So we’ve got to play fundamental defense, square balls up on offense and see what we can do.”
