ALTAMONT — Leaving a six-game losing streak dead in its tracks en route to the postseason, the Labette County Grizzlies beat the Coffeyville Golden Tornado, 41-39, on Friday.
“It’s the end of the season and both teams were trying to get ready for postseason basketball,” Labette County head coach Bradley Argabright said. “It was a full house tonight and we’ll always get team’s best shots when they play in front of a crowd like that. We were blessed with our support from our community.”
Labette County’s Zavier Phillips led the Grizzlies with 13 points. His tip-ins in the second half helped his squad overcome a four-possession deficit.
“He did a really nice job of attacking the offensive glass,” Argabright said. “He’s just so athletic when he gets up by the rim. We ran some early sets for him to get him going. His defense was better tonight too. He made his guy feel uncomfortable.”
The win improved Labette County’s record to 9-11 overall and broke a losing streak that dated back to Feb. 3.
“We’ve struggled to get a win for six games,” Argabright said. “I’m happy for our seniors to get a win in what will probably be our last game at home. We didn’t finish the back half of the season the way we wanted to. But hopefully we know what types of situations we’ll face in the postseason.”
Coffeyville fell to 5-15 overall.
Labette County is the No. 12 seed in the KSHSAA 4A East Sub-State bracket and will face fifth-seeded Chanute on Tuesday in the first round in Chanute.
“We split this year against them,” Argabright said. “We scored 28 points the second time we played them and lost by four. Hopefully we make some shots. Chanute is crafty at what it does. We’ve got to go to their place and that’s a tough environment.”
Coffeyville, the No. 16 seed, will face top-seeded Atchision on the road on Tuesday.
