No. 5 Labette dominated Highland on Saturday as the Cardinals beat the Scotties, 81-42, on sophomore day. The win put Labette one win away from at least a share of the KJCCC crown.
Labette held Highland to 10 points in the first half and led 44-10, effectively putting the game away.
“We’ve really been doing that a lot lately,” Labette head coach Mitch Rolls said. “We’re holding teams to single digits in quarters. That shows our kids are ready to follow the gameplan. When they defend and apply themselves, these are the results we get.”
The Scotties shot 27.3% from the field while Labette shot 51.7%.
Jayla Smith led the Cardinals with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting while adding eight rebounds and three steals. The sophomore has emerged as a top threat in the past month.
“In the last month, even if she doesn’t score a bunch, she still does everything else,” Rolls said. “She’s one of the best defenders in the country. She’s turned herself into an elite rebounder and her offensive game has always been there. She’s got to keep playing well.”
Nisea Burrell (17 points), Janiya Ree (13), Ishuana Hunter (13) and Wakiryah Daniels (10) all reached double figures for the Cardinals.
“Our kids are motivated to get these last few games and put ourselves in a position to win a conference championship,” Rolls said. “Our kids are hungry. If they can keep it up for one more game, we can be at least co-champions.”
Labette improved to 23-4 overall and 12-1 in KJCCC play. Highland, currently third in the conference, fell to 18-11 and 7-5 respectively.
Labette travels to face Neosho County in Chanute on Wednesday. A win for the Cardinals would give them at least a share of the KJCCC title.
Wednesday’s game is also a rematch from a Feb. 4 tilt that featured two ejections and six technical fouls. Labette came back in the last minute to win, 85-82.
“We’ve got to treat it like a championship game,” Rolls said. “You add in the fuel from last game and we’ll get the best game of the year. We have to be playing our best basketball at this time of year.”
