WICHITA — While no medals or finals appearances were earned, Labette County athletes showed out in decent numbers on the first day of the KSHSAA State Track and Field Championships on Friday.
“I thought our kids did really well today,” Labette County head coach Christian Wacker said. “We didn’t get quite where we wanted to with some kids. They gave it their all, though. They never sat back. It was some good competition today.”
A ninth-place finish in the 4A boys 110 meter hurdles prelims by Russell McCarty was the highest finish earned on Labette County’s roster Friday.
McCarty also finished 12th in the 4A boys 300 hurdles prelims. A regional champion in the hurdles last week, McCarty’s day was a surprise.
“It just wasn’t his best race,” Wacker said. “The other competition had really good days, too. Russell was one-hundredth of a second off. He makes finals in 5A or 6A.” He added Class 4A was “just really competitive.”
Abby Pegues took 15th in the 4A girls 100 hurdles prelims (17.44). Jasmine Perez was 13th in the 200 prelims (27.39).
Aubrey Boss nabbed 10th in the 400 prelims (1:04.89) while Alex Meister was 13th in the 3,200 (10:27.90).
Anna Cantrell got 11th in the girls 3,200 run (12:44.03).
Ava Alloway and Pegues finished 10th and 13th, respectively, in pole vault with marks of 9’0” and 8’6”.
“They both looked really good,” Wacker said. “I wish they had more years to work on it. It’s such a technically challenging event. Their form from last year to this year is worlds apart. They were right in the competition.”
Labette County’s girls 4x100 relay team of Aubrey Boss, Kinsley Boss, Allee Martin and Perez took 15th (52.46) in the prelims. The 4x400 relay team of the Boss sisters, Libby Pool and Perez was 14th (4:21.90).
“I’m just hoping the kids get out there and compete again tomorrow,” Wacker said. “Alex (Meister) has two more shots to crack into the podium. I think he’ll have a really good shot.”
