Playing in her third year after her true sophomore year was called off early due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Labette Cardinals softball first baseman Grey Holland is this year’s 2020-21 Parsons Sun Labette Female Athlete of the Year.
“Grey is the epitome of what our program is about,” Labette softball head coach Ryan Phillips said. “We gather great athletes that may need one tool to fine-tune to be a great player. She ended up being one of the better hitters in our program’s history. She matured well and listened. That’s what we’re about.”
Holland broke the school’s career record for home runs and tied the single season record, blasting 15 bombs this spring. Holland also hit .398 with 69 RBI and 66 hits while earning second-team All-KJCCC honors.
“She was the drive and heart of our team the last few years,” Phillips said. “A year ago, she missed 10 days with a family issue and you could feel the difference in the dugout mentally and physically. She was our success whether it was picking somebody up or getting the day started right.”
Holland helped Labette win 34 games, finish second in the KJCCC, earns a top 10 national ranking and advance to the region tournament finals.
