IOLA — Twenty-three points from transfer sophomore guard Tyler Garrett, coupled with the second double-double from Toraze Dobbs in as many games this season, helped Labette elevate past Allen 77-73 in the Red Devil Classic finale on Saturday evening.
Labette trailed the game at halftime 39-33 and trailed by as much as eight in the final 10 minutes before pulling out the comeback victory.
“I was really happy with our guys never blinking,” Labette head coach Jerrod Stanford said. “We had some foul trouble and we just kept coming. That was really, really encouraging.”
Garrett’s game-high 23 points came on 5-of-11 shooting with his total being swelled by a 10-of-11 night at the charity stripe.
“He let the game come to him,” Stanford said. “The driving lanes were open for him. Then he made free throws down the stretch. That kept the lead for us no matter what took place.”
Dobbs, who shot 3-of-14 from the field, scored 10 points while adding 12 rebounds to his night’s work. His double-double marks two for the season just two games into the year.
“He’s doing a good job,” Stanford said. “We’re able to play him 35 minutes a night. His efficiency is down a little bit because he’s exerting energy other places in the game. He’s doing a great job on the glass and being an impact rebounder.”
Makiyah Jones also reached double figures for the Cardinals with 16 points. Jones and Bryson Dennis paced Labette with three assists.
Malik Hardmon led Allen with 21 points.
Standing at 2-0 on the season, Labette’s campaign continues at the Hutchinson Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Cardinals will play a pair of Division I KJCCC schools in Barton and No. 10 Hutchinson, respectively.
“We’ve got to continue to clean up our defense,” Stanford said. “We’re having some breakdowns. We need to get those locked in. Offensively, we need to get more efficient with what we’re doing. We’re playing for our game goals then we go from there.”
