Jadeyn Wyrick, a Labette County High School graduate, made her season debut in the circle as the Labette Cardinals swept the Pratt Beavers 11-3, 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon at home.

Labette dominated their Kansas Jayhawk Conference Division I foes in both games, notching 21 hits over the two games.

“There’s never anything bad about two wins,” Labette head coach Ryan Phillips said. “You’ll always take a sloppy win over a nice-played loss. We played well at times today but didn’t play great all the time. We’re still getting caught up from being off the field so long and catching up to live pitching. But overall, we played well.”

Wyrick, who missed the first six games of the season recovering from medical issues, delivered a gem in the circle for the Cardinals in Game 2. Wyrick was perfect through three innings and had a no-hitter through five innings before being pulled in the sixth frame.

“She worked ahead in the count, threw down in the zone and looked really good,” Phillips said. “We had her on a bit of a pitch count. She surpassed that a little bit going into the sixth because I knew what was going on. We’re just trying to keep her safe. But her ball moved really well. That was probably the best pitching performance we’ve had.”

Cardinals first baseman Grey Holland launched two home runs and tallied four RBI on the day.

Now 6-2 on the season, Labette faces Independence at home on Saturday in another matchup against a KJCCC Division I team. Independence’s head coach is Sam Allen, a Labette alum that played under Phillips.

“They’ll always come ready to play against Labette,” Phillips said. “Independence will be geared up, ready and prepared. Sam does a great job having her team ready every time they step on the field. So we’ve got to do what we can do.”
