ALTAMONT — Coffeyville ended a nine-year losing streak to Labette County on Friday as the Golden Tornado wrapped the regular season with a 44-33 win over the Grizzlies.
“We’ve got to be better earlier,” Labette County head coach Brianna Volmer said. “We were in scramble mode the whole second half. By that time, we were just trying to get things to fall. We missed big shots. Hats off to Coffeyville. They executed their gameplan.”
The last time Coffeyville beat Labette County was in 2014, when the Golden Tornado earned a ticket to the state tournament.
Coffeyville’s offense carved up the Grizzlies with high-low action and backdoor cuts to earn looks at the rim.
“That’s something we talked about in the locker room,” Volmer said. “We’ve defended four-high sets all year long. We’re better than what we showed defensively. We work on that every day. For us not to play solid defense, that’s our fault.”
Kayton O’Brien led the Grizzlies with a game-high 20 points. Her ball-hawking on defense kept Labette County competitive for much of the second half.
“Kayton was hounding the ball and wanted to win,” Volmer said. “She’s a competitor and she wanted to win. Our defense didn’t back that up. And we had turnovers and big moments. Kayton was a bright spot. She didn’t even leave the floor.”
Taylor Caron led Coffeyville with 11 points.
Coffeyville improved to 6-14 overall with a win and ensured a berth into the KSHSAA 4A East Sub-State Tournament.
Labette County dipped to 9-11 overall with the loss.
Labette County is the No. 11 seed in the sub-state tournament and will face sixth-seeded Baldwin in the first round on Wednesday.
The Grizzlies have proven capable of playing at a high level — a win over ranked Parsons serving as proof. But Friday’s loss felt like a season-low heading into the postseason.
“We’ve done a good job of never getting too high with the highs and too low with the lows,” Volmer said. “We’ve got to bring positive energy. We’ll bounce back and learn. We have to learn or else our season ends.”
Coffeyville is the No. 15 seed and will face SEK League champion Fort Scott in the first round.
