The Parsons Vikings are still searching for their first victory of the 2019-20 campaign after falling to SEK League leader Chanute 71-31 on Tuesday night.
“We were just outmatched tonight across the board,” Parsons head coach Pat Schibi said. “When we play girls our own age, we can play with the best of them. In the fourth quarter when they had their JV in, we scored pretty quickly.”
Kori Babcock of Chanute led all scorers with 16 points. Jacey Lewis added 15 points for the Blue Comets, while Makayla Schoenhofer and Mattilyn Cranor added 14 apiece.
Briona Patterson led Parsons with 11 points on the night.
“She gets a lot of reps and will be a great basketball player down the road,” Schibi said. “She’s just one of a lot of young girls that are out there playing.”
Schibi cited struggles at breaking the press and turnovers as a catalyst to a snowball loss.
“We knew they were long and lanky,” Schibi said. “We told the girls over half our passes had to be bounce passes, and we didn’t do that. There were a lot of mental mistakes from us that didn’t allow us to stay in the game.”
Chanute improved to 7-1 with the win and 5-0 in SEK League play, while Parsons dropped to 0-8 and 0-4 respectively.
Parsons will host Fort Scott, which is 1-6 on the season, on Friday before traveling to Chetopa on Monday.
“We’ve got to come back and have good practices,” Schibi said. “We feel our next two opponents are winnable games.”
