BONNER SPRINGS — In Brianna Volmer’s head coaching debut with the Labette County Grizzlies, the reigning SEK League champions dropped their first game of the season. Labette County fell to Bonner Springs, 56-45, on Friday night.
Despite the loss, Volmer left Friday’s loss feeling optimistic with her team’s performance against a Class 5A school.
“I’m really positive after tonight. We answered a lot of questions about where we’re at and what we’re capable of,” Volmer said. “I know what we need to prepare for now.”
Mariyah Noel of Bonner Springs poured it on to the tune of 37 points against the Grizzlies.
“They’ve got one of the most athletic kids in the state right now and she did what she does best — get to the rim and control the tempo,” Volmer said. “We limited her possessions in the second half. But we didn’t capitalize offensively and missed a bunch of free throws.”
Kayton O’Brien, also making her Labette County basketball debut after transferring from Oklahoma, led the Grizzlies with 18 points.
“She’s a smart player and proved that tonight,” Volmer said. “She was relentless and stayed out of foul trouble, which is something that plagued us tonight. She proved that she can be a balanced attack and wants the ball in her hands. She played a great game tonight.”
Labette County travels to Mulvane on Tuesday as part of the T-Bird Classic.
“We have to limit turnovers,” Volmer said. “Mulvane is going to play hard and they bring a lot of quick, athletic guards. We’ve got to worry about us this early in the season and what we need to fix. We’ve got our thumb on the pulse of what that is now.”
