CHERRYVALE — Cherryvale’s boys basketball team improved to 2-0 in the league and 9-2 overall after an 89-50 thrashing of Bluestem on Friday.

Friday’s game was Cherryvale’s sixth in 11 days. The Chargers were pretty even with Bluestem in the opening quarter, but the home team poured on the offense in the second and third stanzas and put the game out of reach at 78-45 at the end of the third.

“Bluestem came out shooting real well in the first half,” Cherryvale coach Rodney Vigil said. “We were able to get some good looks in transition and our halfcourt sets.”

He said Cherryvale started to wear them down toward the end of the half.

“We get a few days to get our legs under us before we head into a tough February,” Vigil said.

Brock Adkison scored 15 points to lead scoring for Cherryvale. K.Hooper scored 14, Devin Sawyer dumped in 13 and Landon Bennett 12.

IN THE GIRLS game, Cherryvale tripped up Bluestem 68-54, improving to 7-4.

Cherryvale had an early lead but Bluestem kept the game close through the first half. A 21-point performance in the third quarter pushed Cherryvale toward the win.

Morrigan Catlin scored 20 and Mariah Monroy 19 to lead Cherryvale’s offense.

“This was a long week, and we needed to end with a big league win, and they got the job done,” Cherryvale girls coach Kelsey Overacker said. “I was proud of the overall team effort. It was a quick-paced game and both teams fought through being tired. Jailee Reister had a sequence of three steals and six points in a row in the third that really got the momentum going for her team. We had scoring all around and were very unselfish with the ball. I’m proud of our effort tonight against a tough Bluestem team.”
