INDEPENDENCE — The Parsons Vikings girls’ tennis team competed at a tournament in Independence on Saturday. Parsons finished sixth out of six teams in a loaded field, notching six points.
However, Gracen Friess shined again by taking second place in the No. 1 singles bracket with four wins out of five matches.
Friess’ only loss came to Annabell Adams of Circle by a score of 8-5. The junior and most tenured member of Parsons’ roster this fall then defeated Piper Marquez of Independence 8-1, Izzy Williams of Spring Hill by default, Eliza Camp of Winfield 8-1 and Nalea Payton of El Dorado 8-5.
“Gracen played really well,” Posch said. “I was really excited with how well her match with the Circle girl went. That Adams girl finished third at state last year. We wanted to see where Gracen stands, and it was a fantastic outing for her.”
As for Shultz and Farris, the two went 2-3 on the day. The Vikings’ pairing beat Abi Bitson and Maren Edison of Circle 8-7(4) and Mika Carr and Anna Ross of Winfield 8-6. Parsons’ three losses came to Kadyn King and Tia Gregory of Independence 8-3, Avery Anderon and Layla Smith of Spring Hill 8-5 and Makayla Chabot and Mallory Parsons 8-1.
“Being sophomores, normally they’d be in the No. 2 doubles slot,” Posch said. “They’re playing tougher matches, but it’ll make them better by the end of the year.”
Circle won the tournament with a team score of 16 points, followed by Winfield (11), Independence (10), El Dorado (9) and Spring Hill (8).
Parsons’ No. 2 singles competitor Caitlin Chalker as well as Alix Webb and Natalie McIntosh in No. 2 doubles both went 0-5 on the day.
"The competition was really stiff for them," Posch said. "That's about what I expected. We're just trying to get them better."
Parsons returns to Forest Park on Sept. 12 for another tournament hosted by Columbus.
“We’re going back to the basics,” Posch said. “We’ll focus on the fundamentals with ground strokes and volleys and serves. Progressively, we want to see our serves get better. We want to crack it up a notch for our beginners.”
