COFFEYVILLE — Labette County was down six points in the fourth quarter then scored two unanswered touchdowns to earn a 27-19 win at Field Kindley High School on Friday night.
“It was a battle. Coffeyville played hard. They came out swinging,” Labette County head coach Sean Price said. Coffeyville scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to take the lead. “We fought back.”
“At Labette County our kids just don’t quit. It’s character all the way,” Price said.
Labette County generated nearly 450 yards of offense Friday night in the win, most of it on the ground. Coffeyville had nearly 270 yards of offense divided evenly between passing and running plays.
Kooper Peak took snaps again for the Grizzlies and completed 20 of 38 passes for 303 yards. Nathan Smith was one of Peak’s primary receivers, catching 10 passes for 188 yards. Ethan Jameson was another target and had two catches for 93 yards and one touchdown.
Trent Brock had 135 rushing yards for the Grizzlies on 12 carries, his second week of gaining more than 100 yards. He scored three touchdowns.
Price said the Grizzly defense performed well Friday night. Free safety Ethan Jameson had two tackles and two interceptions and one pass break up. Linebacker Andrew Jameson had 13 tackles, two for a loss. Hunter Millbern, playing with a broken thumb in a cast, had nine tackles. Trent Brock had eight tackles, one for a loss. Andon Searles and Caleb Haggard each had seven tackles and Mitchell House had six tackles.
“Defense played really well. They really did,” Price said.
Price likes what he’s seeing from Peak, who played hard the entire game.
“I just couldn’t be prouder of the coaches and the kids. They’re not going to die. They’re not going to quit.
“Come to Labette County you better put on a hard hat because we’re going to fight you the whole game.”
Price said Labette County was undersized again on the line against Coffeyville. But the Grizzlies’ hard-nosed play made up the difference.
Next week, Labette County, now 2-1, travels to Winfield. The Grizzlies will return home on Oct. 4 when they host Fort Scott.
