GIRARD — How Saturday’s KSHSAA 3A Sub-State title game started ended up defining it as the Frontenac Raiders beat the Cherryvale Chargers, 67-48.
With both teams seeking consecutive trips to the state tournament, Frontenac buried Cherryvale in a 20-1 hold to start the game.
“We know how to run a press break, we just let our nerves get to us,” Cherryvale head coach Kelsey Overacker said. “It was a big game with emotions and they took advantage of that.”
Cherryvale spent the rest of the game trying to claw its way back. The Chargers trimmed the deficit to as little as nine in the second half.
“You can’t put yourself in a hole,” Overacker said. “I don’t see how Frontenac isn’t ranked. They can do it all. And it’s hard to climb back against that.”
Hattie Pyle led Frontenac with 22 points while Cherryvale’s Jailee Reister led the Chargers with 17 points.
“We missed a lot of easy shots tonight,” Overacker said. “Especially early. If we hit a couple of those, our energy and attitude is a little different. Even the crowd got deflated and that’s hard to work through.”
Kelsi Lantz, a senior who’s one of two players in school history to both score 1,000 points and play in the state tournament, finished her final game with a dozen points.
“She’s just a competitor who plays at a high level,” Overacker said. “When her head’s right, she’s hard to beat. Her emotions got to her a little bit tonight, but I’d take her any night with me.”
Cherryvale’s season ends with an 18-5 overall record, the winningest season in Overacker’s tenure.
“There’s a reason we were both at the state tournament last year and it’s unfortunate only one of us could go,” Overacker said. “Looking back, I can’t remember the last time Cherryvale has had an 18-win season. You can’t argue with that. We finished some tough games. This year was successful for sure. And these seniors put us back on the map. Now the underclassmen have a good road paved for them.”
In addition to losing Lantz, Jenni Bunyard, Alivia Kaiser and Katrelle Narcisse also graduate.
Cherryvale does return plenty of production, including Reister and forward Bethany Umbarger.
“We’ll buy into the little things,” Overacker said. “Rebounding is something we struggle with. Size is part of it, but you’ve got to want it. We got exposed in some little things tonight. We’ll get more mentally tough. But if we clean up some things, we return a solid group.”
Frontenac heads to Hutchinson for the Class 3A state tournament.
