HUTCHINSON — The Labette Cardinals, who won two straight games to start the season, are now riding a two-game losing streak following a pair of losses to Division I opponents Barton and No. 7 Hutchinson over the weekend.

The Cardinals lost their first game on Friday to Barton 96-80 before dropping their Saturday tilt to Hutchinson 100-54.

Against Barton on Friday, Barton’s depth overtook Labette’s as the Cougars got 53 points off the bench.

Toraze Dobbs led Labette with 18 points, while Luis Melian and Xavier Ughutevbe added 13 apiece for the Cardinals.

Facing off against nationally ranked Hutchinson on Saturday, the Cardinals were held to 13 points in the first half as the Blue Dragons took command of the game early.

Dobbs again paced Labette with 17 points while Tyler Garrett was the only other player to reach double figures for the Cardinals with 11 points.

The Cardinals were held to 25.6% shooting from the field, including a dismal 4-of-25 on 3-pointers, against Hutch.

“It was a weekend that made it glaringly obvious where we need to get better as a team,” Labette head coach Jerrod Stanford said. “We will learn, grow and get better.”

Barton and Hutchinson were far and away the best teams of the first four that Labette faced as the Cardinals look to get battle-hardened for the KJCCC season next semester.

“We got to play in a big-time arena in a big-time atmosphere against championship level competition,” Stanford said. “It’s the closest thing we can simulate playing in the Region VI final inside an arena.”

Labette gets the mid-week off before traveling north again this weekend for the KCK Classic. The Cardinals will face North Central Missouri and Cowley on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Labette then has a road game on Nov. 19 against Rhema Bible College before its home opener on Nov. 21 against Sterling JV.
