In Wednesday night’s home opener for the Parsons Vikings girls, they fell to the Pittsburg Purple Dragons 62-28 to remain winless on the season.

The Vikings are now 0-5 on the year with one game left before winter break.

Parsons kept the game close through the first quarter as the Vikings and Purple Dragons were tied at 7-7 through eight minutes of action.

“The effort we put out in the first quarter was phenomenal,” Parsons head coach Pat Schibi said. “We had two new girls starting that hadn’t started before. So I was proud with how we came out.”

Parsons also came hobbled into the game as starters Aubrey Lassen and Kierstyn Houk both suffered injuries that will likely sideline them for a majority, if not the rest of the season.

“Some girls had to step up,” Schibi said. “It was an opportunity for those girls to shine.”

Alix Webb led Parsons in scoring with 11 points, while Sanya Anderson added 10 to the Vikings’ box score. Ela Hendrickson led Pittsburg with 14, while Zoe Pinamonti added 11 and Sophia Pinamonti chipped in 12.

As Schibi continues his rebuild of the Parsons girls program, the message in the game was defense for his unit.

“We preach defense,” Schibi said. “We held them down, I felt like, in the first half.”

The Vikings get their most manageable opponent on Friday as they travel to Coffeyville in their second SEK League game.

“We’re hoping to go into Coffeyville and get a win before Christmas break,” Schibi said. “The girls are playing hard, so that’s all we can ask for.”
