Two walk-off wins at home helped propel the Labette Cardinals to a series win over the Neohso County Panthers as the Cardinals won three-of-four games.

Labette won Games 1 and 2 at home on Thursday, both in walk-off fashion, 3-2 and 10-8. As the series moved to Chanute, the Cardinals took Game 3 9-6 before dropping the finale 18-4.

The three wins swelled Labette’s record to 6-16 overall and 4-8 in KJCCC play while Neosho County dipped to 11-14 and 6-10 respectively.

Labette had been coming off a series loss to Highland where the Cardinals salvaged its lone win in the final game.

“It all came together at the beginning of the series,” Labette head coach Alex Coplon said. “The biggest reason we were able to have success in this series was because of that last win against Highland. That game showed our guys that we could find a way to win. We took that momentum back here at home.”

A pair of Parsons natives came up big at Marvel Park as Luke Wolgamott hit three home runs on Thursday while Joel Schibi was credited with the pinch-hit, walk-off hit in Game 1.

“The Parsons boys made some noise,” Coplon said.

Wolgamott’s showing came against a Neosho County program that originally signed him out of high school before Wolgamott transferred this past offseason.

“We talked before the series about playing against his former team,” Coplon said. “It was important for him to control his emotions. He played that series with class, took advantage of it and I know it felt good for him.”

Boone Lasater blasted a walk-off, two-run home run in Game 2 for the Cardinals.

Schibi started the game on the hill but was yanked early due to an injury. Bryan Hulme came in relief and lasted 3.2 innings.

“We had some adversity to get through early in that game,” Coplon said. “We started Joel on the mound and he had some discomfort, so we took him out early. Bryan’s line may not look fantastic, but he kept us in that game and it was a very gritty performance.”

Most of Labette’s offense in Game 3 came off the bats of Lasater, Seth Collingsworth and Grant Yates. All three Cardinals homered and combined for eight RBI.

“Grant was coming off a tough week, so that was a big-time confidence swing for him,” Coplon said. “As far as the other two, Boone and Seth are swinging the bat pretty well right now. The wind was blowing out, they found some pitches up in the zone and they put them out of the yard.”

Bryson Van Sickle also delivered a gem on the hill for Labette in Game 3, going the distance while allowing three earned runs and six hits. He punched out 13 batters.

Neosho County scored runs in every frame of Game 4 to avoid the sweep.

Labette faces Allen in its next KJCCC series. All four games will be in Parsons as Allen’s field is having new turf installed. The first two games are on Thursday.

“You’ve got two teams playing with a lot of confidence,” Coplon said. “Allen beat Cowley the other day. They’re a team that hasn’t played as many conference games, but they’re a good squad that’s well coached. It’ll be a tough series and we’ve got to be ready to play.”
