NEODESHA — A rubber match between the Cherryvale Chargers and Neodesha Bluestreaks went the way of the hosts as the Bluestreaks won, 41-30, on Tuesday night.
It was the third time the two schools met this season — Cherryvale and Neodesha also met three times last year including in the sub-state championship.
“Neodesha wanted it more than we did tonight,” Cherryvale head coach Kelsey Overacker said. “They brought more heart and more effort. We’re not mentally tough right now and we don’t respond when we get hit in the mouth.”
Cherryvale’s feast-or-famine season on offense struck famine on Tuesday night as the Chargers struggled to solve the Bluestreaks.
Neodesha’s length inside and quick hands forced Cherryvale into turnovers and missed shots.
Offensive struggles despite available weapons have been the defining characteristic in Cherryvale’s three losses.
It’s also in stark contrast to the Chargers’ last game against Anderson County, where Cherryvale’s high-octane output gave it the War on 54 championship.
“If there was an answer I knew, I’d be fixing it,” Overacker said. “We’ve just got to get tougher. Against Anderson County, we created turnovers and ran our offense. Tonight, we let Neodesha control the ball from the tip.”
The loss dropped Cherryvale to 8-3 on the season.
“I’d like to see our kids not drop their heads,” Overacker said. “I can’t fix the fear I saw in their eyes tonight. I can’t fix them being scared. When we aren’t confident, it’s hard. We were coming off a big win and we should be peaking. For some reason, we just aren’t.”

Cherryvale returns home on Friday for its homecoming game against Bluestem, the only other team responsible for handing the Chargers a loss this year.
“When we can’t get something going, we need somebody to step up,” Overacker said. “I’m kind of at a loss.”
