Playing a postseason game at home one year removed from a winless season, the Parsons Vikings girls’ campaign ended on Saturday with a 59-54 loss to Coffeyville.
Coffeyville built a 23-6 advantage through the first quarter. Despite the Vikings trimming the deficit to two points on multiple occasions, the early hole proved too deep to dig out of.
“The first quarter was the difference in the game,” Parsons head coach Pat Schibi said. “We pretty much matched them the rest of the way. Our girls played until the last second.”
Sydney Schibi led the Vikings with 14 points while Briona Patterson and Iniya Hinman added 13 and 11 respectively.
Adyson Peck (20) and Kylie Speer (19) paced the Golden Tornado’s offense.
“The nerves got to the girls for a little bit and Coffeyville’s seniors stepped up,” Schibi said. “They didn’t want to be done. Speer and Peck carried them. I thought we guarded them pretty well but they hit some tough shots.”
With the win, Coffeyville advances to the semifinals of the Class 4A Sub-State Tournament against Labette County in Altamont on Wednesday.
As for Parsons, its final record stands at 5-13 on the season.
“The girls never doubted the coaching staff,” Schibi said. “They kept on the path. They got better and that’s all you can ask of a team.”
The Vikings don’t graduate a senior going into next year, so any progress next year will come from internal growth.
Ballhandling and defense will be primary focus points for Schibi and his staff as the rebuilding of the Vikings girls continues.
“I’m excited to see how these girls mature and come together,” Schibi said. “We have to put in more time in the summer. If they do, the potential is there. We’re planning on hitting it harder than we have in the past. We’ll try to play in some leagues and get some games in Wichita to see some tougher competition.”
