To The Sun:
I find it difficult to listen to the news in today’s world. I suspect several of you feel the same way as this crusty old man. Today I heard the tragic news of some deranged young man walking into a Florida high school and killing 17 students. I also heard that so far in 2018, there have been 16 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. For God’s sake folks, we are not even two months into this year yet. Has the world gone nuts? The figures I am speaking about are in the U.S.A. not the entire world.
For the last 30 years, the people we have elected have done little except draw fat paychecks and be in the back pockets of lobbyists. We need term limits on every elected office. Of course that is just my opinion.
The Florida shooting and many others were done with an assault weapon like a semi-automatic AR-15. If you turn your clocks back a few years you will remember when President Reagan was shot and one of his aides was also shot and spent the rest of his life in a wheel chair. His name was James Brady and Congress actually enacted the “Brady Bill,” which made these assault weapons illegal. But there was a sunshine limit on the law and guess what? Congress sat right there and allowed this law to die and have refused to re-enact it. Yep, the AR-15 is now legal and appears to be the gun of choice for some shooters. The only thing assault weapons are good for is the killing of people.
As the song says: “This world is not my home, I’m just a passin through.” Well, good will prevail. I know that because “I read the end of the book and we win.”
