Thomas A. Mitchell, 80, of Parsons died at 9:04 a.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at Elmhaven East nursing home.
He was born Oct. 18, 1940, at rural Altamont, a son of Fred L. and Caroline (Williams) Mitchell. He was raised in the Altamont area and graduated from Labette County High School in 1958. He later attended Parsons Junior College and then graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in agronomy.
From 1960 to 1964 he served in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam. He received an honorable discharge from service on July 17, 1966. Tom was very proud of his military service and was a life member of Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Following his military service Tom worked in the field of agriculture agronomy and owned/operated Sunflower Seed Co. at Parsons.
Tom and Alice Ann Callen were married on Nov. 18, 1960, at Parsons. They divorced in 1980. He later married Shelia Duvall, and they later divorced.
Survivors include a son, Paul Mitchell of Atlanta; a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and John Michaels of Thayer; and a granddaughter, Megan Imel of Wichita.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred “Bugs” Mitchell Jr. and Merlin Mitchell; and a grandson, Cameron Chambers, on March 31, 2012.
No service is planned at this time. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery at Altamont. Arrangements are under the direction of Carson-Wall Funeral Home.
