David R. Abbott

OSWEGO — David R. Abbott, 71, of Oswego passed away the afternoon of Wednesday, April 7, 2021, at his home. His death was unexpected.

He was born on Aug. 3, 1949, to William Winfield and Mary Ellen (Schooley) Abbott in Memphis, Tennessee. When he was a young boy, his family moved to Coffeyville, where he grew up and attended school. Following graduation from Labette County High School in 1967, David attended Coffeyville Junior College. He served in the U.S. Army mechanized infantry in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970.

Upon returning from the service, David began working at Funk Manufacturing in Coffeyville, then Magic Circle Manufacturing and later the Union Pacific Railroad for a time. He then worked for Coons Manufacturing, now Diamond Coach, in Oswego until becoming disabled in a work-related accident in 1991.

He was a member of Oswego Christian Church. Over the years, he had been active in the Chetopa Veterans of Foreign Wars, including being a past commander. He was also a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the Heartland Veterans in Independence. His greatest joy came from spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting and was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan.

On Aug. 1, 1980, David and Jo Lynne Brown were united in marriage in Dearing. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Melissa Miller of Oswego and Robin Ross of Chetopa; five grandchildren, Andrew Lehman, Molly Lehman, Jake Moore, Caitlyn Moore and Andelyn Lawellin; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Don Abbott of Hot Springs, Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; a sister; a grandson; and a close cousin, Rick Schooley.

A memorial service and burial with military honors in Coffeyville will be announced by Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home at a later date.
