Walter Wayne Autem

FLOWER MOUND, Texas — Walter Wayne Autem, 90, of Flower Mound, Texas, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2021, in Flower Mound, Texas.

Wayne was born on a farm near Strauss on Nov. 13, 1930, to Martha (nee Reich) and Walter Autem. He was the fourth and youngest child and the couple’s only son. Wayne served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955 and was stationed in Germany. He later worked at Harvest Brand in Pittsburg and the Katy Railroad in Parsons. He also was a longtime farmer near Strauss. Wayne was previously married to Nechia Sue Fisher and they had two sons, Joseph and John, born in 1958 and 1959, respectively. They were later divorced.

Wayne married the love of his life, Carol Poage Mathis, on Dec. 7, 1984, in Miami, Oklahoma. They shared a long list of common interests, including old western films, classic country music, card games, miniature pinschers and cross-country travel in their RV. Carol passed away on May 4, 2016. Wayne was a loyal husband, devoted father and an adoring grandfather.

Wayne leaves behind both of his sons, Joe Autem (wife, Elizabeth) of Double Oak, Texas, and John Autem; his stepchildren, Pam Atteberry (Matt), Vickie Souter (fiance, Jeff Stringer), Dale Mathis (Pam), Donna Pauletic and Kandee Grinage-Smith, all of Parsons. He also leaves five grandchildren, J.W. Autem, Katrina Autem, Johnna Autem, Tyson Autem and McKenna Autem Nicholas; and nine stepgrandchildren, Brandan Souter, Blake Mathis, Travis Rossman, Jake Mathis, Sabrina Mathis, A.J. Houghton, Bryce Grinage, Emily Benicase and Lindsey Robertson; and many great-grandchildren. Wayne was well loved by his sisters’ children and leaves five nieces and nephews behind, Debbie Innes (Ron), Rexanna Sanders (Bill), Walter Boore (Theresa), David Turkington (Maye) and Linda O’Neil.

Wayne is reunited with Carol in death, along with his parents and three sisters, Dora Boore (Walter Rex), Vera Mercer (Wayne “Mush”) and their son, Dennis, and Hattie Turkington (Ray).

A celebration of life is planned from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at a private residence, 22068 Lyon Road, Parsons. The family welcomes friends to stop by and share a sweet memory or story of times spent with Wayne. A private memorial service will be before the celebration of life. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery at Altamont.
