Matthew Keith Maloney, 45, died at 10:55 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021, at Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
He was born on July 17, 1975, in Wichita. Four days later he met his forever parents and was taken home to grow up in Parsons and was welcomed by many family and friends.
Matt graduated from Parsons High School with the Class of 1994. During high school he played football and golf. He also was a member of The Music Company and had leads in the musicals “South Pacific” and “Fiddler on the Roof.” He worked after school assisting the greenskeeper at the Parsons Country Club.
Following graduation from Kansas State University in 1998, Matt became the golf course superintendent at the Parsons Country Club. He advised multiple courses in Southeast Kansas and was known as one of the best bent grass superintendents in the area. Over the years he was superintendent of the Katy Golf Course, both golf courses in Chanute and his most loved, Prairie Ridge Golf Course in Erie. Matt spent five years at Hardscrabble Country Club in Fort Smith, Arkansas, only to find his true love was smaller courses where you got to know everyone.
Matt loved the outdoors. He enjoyed the challenge of working on cars, motorcycles, tractors — anything mechanical. He started early at age 7 riding motorcycles and driving the family tractor. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter, able to field dress a deer and eat venison the same evening.
Matt loved the family dogs through the years, but Mandy, his yellow lab, was his favorite. She knew to stay off the golf course greens, not to chase golf balls and was his partner in the golf cart.
Matt was a faithful son, grandson and friend. He is survived by his parents, Keith and Anne Maloney; and his brother, Jon Maloney of Independence.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Laurie Lewis officiating. The service will be livestreamed on the church Facebook page. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall.
The family suggests donations to the Prairie Ridge Matt Maloney Memorial Fund or First Christian Church of Parsons. They may be left at or sent to Carson-Wall Funeral Home, P.O. Box 942, Parsons, KS 67357.
