McCUNE — Joan M. Geary, 89, formerly of McCune, passed away at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020, at Carrington Place in Pittsburg.
She was born on Sept. 28, 1931, on a farm near Altamont to Lloyd J. and Letha (Gearhiser) Terril. She grew up and attended schools in Altamont and graduated from Labette County Community High School in 1949.
On Jan. 2, 1955, she married James R. “Bob” Geary at the First Methodist Church in Parsons. Following their marriage, they lived in Baxter Springs several years before moving to McCune. Mr. Geary preceded her in death on March 19, 2017.
Mrs. Geary worked in in Parsons and Joplin. She later worked at the bank in McCune for several years. She was an avid reader. She enjoyed music and enjoyed playing piano and organ and watching sports and cooking.
She was a member of the McCune United Methodist Church and served as the church organist for many years.
Joan earned her 50-year pin for membership in the Kent Chapter No. 117 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Weir.
Survivors include two grandsons, James T. Geary of Tempe, Arizona, and William M. “Will” Geary of Topeka; and two sisters, Sue Yeats of Nixa, Missouri, and Margaret Seifert of Osage City, Missouri.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, James Michael Geary and Patrick Lee Geary; and a brother, Stanley L. Terril.
A graveside memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at McCune Cemetery.
