Geta F. Markley

Geta F. Markley, 88, a longtime Dennis area resident, passed away at 3:40 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 2020, at Labette Health in Parsons.

She was born on Nov. 18, 1931, near Calico Rock, Arkansas, to Yancy and Edith (Owens) Kytle. Geta grew up at Neosho, Missouri, and attended schools there, graduating from Neosho High School in 1950. She attended junior college in Joplin before moving to Oklahoma City, where she went through the Western Union Telegrapher School. She received her first job at the Western Union office in Parsons later becoming the manager.

She married Howard Markley on Sept. 10, 1955, at Neosho, Missouri. He survives of the home.

Geta worked at the Parsons State Bank and was a homemaker while her son, Phillip, was young. She later worked as a bookkeeper for a local contractor that did work on Big Hill Lake and as the bookkeeper for the family business and farm. Geta also worked at the Parsons Clinic as a medical records receptionist and retired from there in 2000.

Geta enjoyed reading, gardening, canning and cooking for family, friends, her church family and for farm hands. She was an active and faithful member of the Dennis United Methodist Church, where she served the church many in positions.

In addition to her husband, Howard, of the home, Geta is survived by her sister, Beth Halloway of rural Chanute; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her son, Phillip Markley; and a sister, Ella Mae Daniels.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Dennis United Methodist Church with Pastor Pat McReynolds officiating.  Burial will follow in the Harmony Grove Cemetery near Dennis. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 p.m. until service time.
