ERIE — Vergil M. Nicholas Jr., 75, of Erie passed away at 9:35 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2019, at his home in Erie.
He was on born on Dec. 22, 1943, at Lawrence to Vergil and Carol Ellen (Burke) Nicholas. He grew up on the family farm at rural Erie and attended Erie schools, graduating from Erie High School in 1961.
Vergil worked at the Johnson Lumber Co. and on the family farm following high school. He owned and operated Star Lanes bowling alley in Erie in the 1980s. He later worked at the HiLo Cabinet Co. in Chanute for many years in the shipping and receiving department until his retirement in 2009. He moved to Oskaloosa in 2011 and returned to Erie in 2014.
Vergil enjoyed bowling, farming, drag racing and mechanical work. He attended First Christian Church in Erie.
Vergil married Karen Lea Harmonson on March 13, 1964 at Erie. They later divorced. He married Peggie Zerby on Sept. 6, 1983, at Miami, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 2009.
Vergil is survived by his son, David Nicholas and his wife, Erin, of Wichita; his companion, Judy Robinson of the home; and his brother, Ernie “Nick” Nicholas of Phoenix, Arizona.
In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be at a later date at First Christian Church in Erie.
