ST. PAUL — J.B. Smith, 70, of St. Paul died at 10:25 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 2020, at Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul.
He was born Oct. 25, 1949, in Parsons to Henry Miles and Catherine (Maus) Smith. He grew up in St. Paul and attended St. Paul schools, graduating from St. Paul High School in 1968. He attended Kansas State University and earned a degree in chemical engineering.
Following college he was employed about 15 years by Phillips Petroleum Co. and spent considerable time in Norway. He returned to K-State to earn a degree in accounting. He became a certified public accountant and was employed as audit manager for the City of Kansas City, Missouri’s tax office. He retired in 2012.
A few years after his retirement he returned to St. Paul to live. For many years he traveled to Mexico in the winter. He loved to snow ski and take cruises and had gone with nieces and nephews on many of these trips. He loved all sports. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul.
Surviving are three brothers, Lon Smith and Miles Smith, both of St. Paul, and Jim Smith of Garnett; two sisters, Cathy O’Hara of Topeka and Colleen Vitek of Turlock, California; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Larry Smith and Gene Smith; and a sister, Clarita Bryant.
The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul with the Rev. Sam Pinkerton officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery.
The rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in St. Paul.
