INDEPENDENCE — Russell Dean Landwehr, 67, Independence, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2019.
He was born March 10, 1952, in Fredonia to Leo and Roberta (Van Houden) Landwehr. He attended Fredonia schools and graduated from Independence High School. Following high school Russell attend Independence Community College. He was employed in retail and construction. However, his career was as a railroad man, working for both the Santa Fe and Union Pacific railroads. He retired as a track foreman in 2014.
Russell married Cheryl Faler on Dec. 26, 1976, in Independence. Russell was a lifelong resident of the area and a long-time member of St. Andrew Catholic Church of Independence.
An avid outdoorsman, Russell enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and wild harvesting. He also enjoyed traveling, raising cattle and the culinary arts. Russell will be remembered as a husband, father and grandfather extraordinaire.
Survivors include Cheryl, his wife of 42 years; three children, Theron Landwehr and Christopher (Madeline) Landwehr of Lawrence and a daughter, Valerie (Michael) Bonnett, of Hollywood, Florida; six grandchildren, Brock, Breckyn, Beckett, Bronson, Alaric and Livinia; five sisters, June Passauer of Neodesha, Elaine (Frank) Chandler of Parsons, Janet Landwehr, Carolyn (Bob) Leiker and Bonnie (Ron) Wood, all of Independence; and a mother-in-law, Jean Faler, of Independence.
He also leaves behind a large tight-knit extended family.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents; and father-in-law, Capt. Dale Faler.
The rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Friday at Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory, 306 W. Main St., Independence, with the family greeting visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. at the chapel. The service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory with burial to follow in St. Andrew Catholic Cemetery in Independence.
