Frances D. Shepard, 98, of Parsons died at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021, at Parsons Presbyterian Manor.
She was born June 15, 1923, in the rural Altamont area to James E. and Annie G. (Woolfolk) Poage. She grew up in that area and graduated from Labette County High School at Altamont.
On April 13, 1941, she married Chester E. Shepard at Labette City. He preceded her in death on Jan. 10, 1984.
Frances was employed at Parsons State Hospital and Training Center for five years. After the death of her husband, she worked in the bakery of a local supermarket. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Parsons.
Survivors are a daughter, Catherine Welden (Virgil) of Parsons; three granddaughters, Kim Welden of Los Angeles, California, Tammy Welden of Conroe, Texas, and Gail Welden (Cecil Davidson) of Parsons.
She was preceded in death by a son, Larry Shepard; four brothers, Kenneth Poage, Howard Poage, Harold Poage and infant Thomas Poage; and two sisters, Sylvia Gibson and Carol Autem.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home, with the service beginning at 1:30 p.m. Pastor Travis Ball will officiate. Burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery at Altamont. Friends may also call from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home Sunday without the family being present.
