Merlin Wayne “Pete” Myers, 96, of Parsons died at 1:14 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2019, at Parsons Good Samaritan Society.
He was born April 8, 1923, in rural Labette County, a son of Austin Whitson and Della Florence (Spunaugle) Myers. He grew up there and attended rural schools.
He then served in the U.S. Army and upon being discharged was employed at the Katy Railroad until the Parsons shops were closed in 1957. He then worked at Cold Storage and later worked construction for various companies, including LaForge and Budd Construction. He also worked at Princess Homes. After he retired he worked part time at Faith United Methodist Church and was the church custodian.
On May 1, 1943, he was united in marriage to Agnes Hazlett at Parsons. They later divorced.
He married Barbara Helen Whitson on Oct. 2, 1964, at Parsons. She preceded him in death on Jan. 27, 2006.
He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Kansas International Local No. 1280. He enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening and working on small engines and cars. He was able to fix anything that was broken. He and his wife were members of a CB club and he operated a bait shop out of his house. In addition to raising his twins he was involved in raising his other children and babysat grandchildren.
Survivors include a son, Steven Johnston of Parsons; three daughters, Marcia Gale Murphy, Linda McReynolds and her husband, Patrick, all of Parsons, and Barbara Diane Johnston and her husband, Donnie, of Sarcoxie, Missouri; 16 grandchildren, Julie Dietsche, Charlene Bode, Jake Johnston, Audrey Paulson, James Paulson, Kayla Wilson, all of Parsons, Barbara McCoy, Patricia McReynolds-Condon, both of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, William Brian Collins of Lawrence, Daniel McReynolds of Olathe, Shawna Lipinschy of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Charissa Williams, Alicia Marshall, Jonathan Gaines, all of Joplin, Matthew Johnston of Carterville, Missouri, and David Paulson of Wichita; 30 great-grandchildren, Michael Bode, Josh Bode, Heather Bode, Brayden Johnston, James Paulson, all of Parsons, Ross Benavides, Natalie Benavides, McCormick Condon, Zinnia Condon, Eliza Condon, Christopher Coleman, Ericka Coleman, Kaylee Coleman, Nick Coleman, all of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Cassius Collins, Eleanor Collins, both of Lawrence, Isaac McReynolds, Lauren McReynolds, both of Olathe, Payton Gaines, Tori Gaines, both of Baxter Springs, Arabella Gaines of Galena, Caitlin Queen of Kansas City, Missouri, Colton Williams, Hannah Williams, Andrew Marshall, Tanner Marshall, Emma Marshall, all of Joplin, Taylor Paulson, Madeline Paulson, both of Pittsburg, and Christian Paulson of Wichita; three great-great-grandchildren, Tristen Coleman, Braylee Davison and Hayden Sterling, all of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; and two additional great-great-grandchildren soon to arrive.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Alfred, Vernon, Jake and Alvin Myers; three sisters, Elsie Rader, Lora and Francie Myers; and two children, Michael Dale and Judy Christine Myers.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home with Riley Cartwright officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
