Vernon L. Barnett

ALTAMONT — Vernon L. Barnett, 88, of rural Altamont passed away at 3:45 a.m. Monday, June 29, 2020, at the Landmark Hospital in Joplin.

He was born Jan. 12, 1932, in rural Altamont to Frank Ora and Violet Clara (Davidson) Barnett. He grew up and attended school at Altamont and graduated from the Labette County Community High School.

He worked as a machinist for the Katy Railroad for many years. He later worked for Parsons Precision Products, now Ducommun, in Parsons until his retirement.   He was an avid coyote hunter. He also enjoyed wood carving, fishing and hunting.

He married Faye Murphy on June 17, 1950, at Altamont. She preceded him in death in February 1999. He married Carolyn (Walls) Ward on March 11, 2006. She survives of the home.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Barnett, of the home; a son, Michael A. Barnett (Debbie) of Shawnee; a stepson, Jeff Ward (Melissa) of Cherryvale; two stepdaughters, Paula Kastler (Chris) and Lori Wallis ( David), all of Altamont; four grandchildren, Angela Vietti (Matt), Josh Barnett, Matt Huddleston (Meghan) and Meghan May (Ryan); four great-grandchildren, Maliegha Vietti, Teegan Vietti, Pierson Vietti and Maelynn Fordyce; a brother, Ivan Barnett (Dorothy) of Berryton; three sisters, Daqueta Shelley of Abel, Iowa, Mona Harris (John) of rural Columbus and Esther Johnson (Tony) of D’Hanis, Texas; and a brother-in-law, Frankie Murphy (Cheryl) of Bartlett.

In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Huddleston, who passed away in February 2004; a granddaughter, Tami Faye Huddleston, who passed away in November 1985; and a brother- and sister-in-law, Alfred and Wilma (Murphy) Nading.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in the Fellowship Hall of the Altamont Methodist Church.

Following cremation, burial will be at Lake Creek Cemetery at a later date.
