FREDONIA — A former Erie woman died Monday evening from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle accident north of Fredonia.

The accident happened at 8:35 p.m. Monday on Harper Road at the junction of U.S. 400, which is a mile north of Fredonia.

Haley R. Surber, 19, Fredonia, formerly of Erie, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was transferred to Country Side Funeral Home in Chanute.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Cidney N. Smith, 18, Fredonia, was northbound on Harper Road and failed to yield at a stop sign. The Malibu collided with a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan operated by Christine Wen, 39, of Wichita. The van was westbound on the highway at the time.

Wen and her four passengers, Chih Chen Wen, 41, Jonatan Wen, 8, Selah Wen, 6, and Caleb Wen, 10, all of Wichita, were taken to Fredonia Regional Hospital for possible minor injuries.

Smith, the driver of the Malibu, was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for a possible serious injury. Neither she nor Surber wore seat belts, the KHP report said.
