Work on the roundabout at the U.S. 59 and U.S. 160 intersection east of Altamont has been suspended for the winter months, the Kansas Department of Transportation announced Thursday.
Work will resume in March, according to KDOT spokesperson Priscilla Petersen in Chanute.
“Shutting down a project over the winter months is not uncommon,” she said. “During the winter months most project activity slows owing to inclement and inhospitable weather conditions. The stresses of winter driving and snow removal operations would result in extra wear-and-tear to the temporary ‘shoofly’ roadways.”
Traffic will remain on the existing alignment over the winter and the temporary detours for north-south and east-west traffic will open in the spring.
The project still must be completed in the allotted 115 working days, Petersen said. The project is expected to be finished by late summer 2020.
LaForge and Budd Construction of Parsons is the primary contractor on the $3.1 million project.
