Parsons High School forensic students ended their season with 13 students qualifying for state this Friday and six students qualifying for nationals in June.
“When the smoke settled, we had five entries that qualified, qualifying six students for the national tournament. That is considerably up from the norm,” PHS debate and forensics coach Ed Workman said. “This national tournament is all the debate and all the forensics all mixed into one.”
The students’ last competition on April 23 was a national qualifying tournament in Coffeyville, which added to their numbers.
At that tournament, Rayce Baker and Olivia Martinez nabbed first in the duo competition.
Baker also earned a first in humorous interpretation.
“But you can only take one thing to the national tournament so she is taking the duo,” Workman said.
Chloe Pontious is taking her piece in program oral interpretation to nationals now.
Axl Ramirez is going in student congress in the Senate.
The qualifier for Lincoln-Douglas debate was the week before the Coffeyville tournament, where Madelyn Armitage qualified for nationals.
“She had an opportunity to pass on that and take on one of the congress spots that had been vacated by another student, so she did that. That means Makenzie Taliaferro is going in the Lincoln-Douglas spot now,” Workman said. “We also had Jayce Quirin qualify (in congress) but he’s got football and family stuff, so he can’t go. He is heading into his senior year and I think this was an Under Armour invitation only thing, so, you really can’t pass on those.”
Nationals will be June 11-16 in Phoenix, Arizona.
